shrinking woman

today on the train you sat beside me,

my knees hit the wall
as your body grew larger;

the smell of rain
still damp on your coat.

with each of your inhales
you took some of me with you

your fingers drumming on your denim thigh.

a million things
i could have done or said

instead i sat staring at my feet.

three stops –
i felt your gaze.

you exhaled and
i could smell your whiskey.

deep breaths,
my shoelaces are frayed.
